On this page, you’ll find information about what our school offers to help lead all of our students to success. Sun Blaze Elementary, part of Orange County Public Schools (OCPS), follows Florida’s state standards aligned with the OCPS district curriculum, delivered through a multi-tiered, student-centered model focused on literacy, math, science, social studies, STEM inquiry and enrichment opportunities.
-
Sun Blaze utilizes Florida’s state curriculum standards (B.E.S.T. Standards) across core subjects like English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science, and Social Studies. Instruction emphasizes inquiry-based learning, conceptual development, and differentiated support through small group instruction and MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Support).
Teachers work collaboratively in professional learning teams (PLCs) with support from instructional coaches to plan, assess, and analyze student progress.
-
Literacy is taught in a 90-minute reading block with additional time for MTSS support. Early grades focus on phonics and decoding while upper grades build comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and evidence‑based writing aligned to state standards.
Writing instruction includes the process of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing, with exposure to diverse writing genres such as narrative, expository, persuasive, and opinion writing.
-
Math follows the CSA approach—Concrete, Semi-Concrete, Abstract—to ensure understanding before practicing. Lessons incorporate manipulatives, visuals, games, and digital supports. Tools like Successmaker are used to tailor instruction to individual student needs.
-
Science education integrates hands-on, inquiry-driven lessons weekly including labs, experiments, engineering design challenges, and real-world problem-solving. Science is delivered as part of a broader STEM curriculum embedded in core subjects.
-
Social studies instruction at each grade promotes global awareness, cultural understanding, and civic literacy through history, geography, economics, and political science themes.
-
Sun Blaze offers a full specials rotation including art, music, physical education, dance, and orchestra (4th and 5th grade). These areas reinforce and enrich academic learning and are interwoven into the weekly schedule rather than treated as optional extras .
Additionally, the school supports a range of enrichment activities including:
- Academic and competition teams like Battle of the Books, Math Team and Science Team.
- Clubs and crews such as chorus and dance team.
-
The MTSS framework fosters educational equity by systematically delivering individualized academic interventions to students needing support, while simultaneously providing enriching opportunities for those demonstrating mastery.
To ensure all students can thrive, our MTSS behavior framework offers a tiered system of interventions, specifically designed to support students experiencing behavioral challenges.
Differentiated instruction for gifted learners and inclusive supports for ESOL and exceptional student learners are delivered through push‑in and pull‑out services.
